2023
Pyrography
After completing my 2017 100 Days Project I wondered whether I would be able to create my designs in wood. I have finally started to realise this with the purchase of a pyrography kit and some scrap wood - my first try was a mandala which later I turned into a small table using an old broom handle. Other practise pieces have been a wooden box, a few more mandalas and a flower sketch. I have continued to practise my woodburning using my own sketches and copying victorian fairy artists images.
Texture and print
I have been exploring oil and acrylic paint. With my oil paintings I have been particularly focused on textures that can be created by simply using a palette knife and one colour in a grid format. My acrylic paintings explore layers of print and stencils influenced by patterns observed in Viet Nam.
Random repeated patterns
During a Sketchbook project a few years ago I developed a printing/painting pattern with watercolours. I wondered whether this could be recreated with Acrylic. After a bit of playing I had a green background I was happy with. I then used a sketch I did of some pink flowers in my garden to create these paintings. All are acrylic painted on canvases of different sizes.
Sketchbook work from out and about
One of my intentions this year was to fill sketchbooks with ideas and content which I could then use in the studio. Although this has not been as productive as I had wished - here are a few I have completed from home and a few travels. I have used pencil, pen and watercolours. Watch this space as I start to fill sketchbooks with images to later re-create in pyrography.
2023 - Self Portraits
At the beginning of 2023 I completed a self portrait every day. They are in an A5 Sketchbook - simply in pencil. Find a few examples below.
